'SEA CHANGE' I Art Installation
Sea Change was an art installation I created with the intent of bringing awareness to the detrimental issues of plastic pollution in the ocean. Upon entering, the viewer is able to see a joyous oceanic scene in which shimmering lights reflect off blue strands of plastic representing waves, and whale sounds play in the distance. Whilst continuing through the room the path gets smaller and trash becomes more apparent, causing the viewers to feel disturbed and claustrophobic. The goal is to create an environment that provides an emotional experience to raise awareness about the current issues of plastic pollution and inspire change. Before exiting the installation the path leads to a separate room where guests can make a pledge of actions they will take to combat plastic waste. This dichotomy of imagery is meant to engage the viewers’ emotions, invoking positive thoughts and feelings about the ocean and also the tragedy of what can go unseen, our part in destroying or saving the only planet we have.
'SEA CHANGE' became an installation that was a collaboration of 3 disciplines; art, tech, and music. 28 students and 3 teachers worked on the installation for several weeks. The installation was made up of plastic collected from beach cleanups and recycled plastic drives held at Turning Point School. A representative from the Plastic Pollution Coalition came and wrote about the installation which was read by an educator in Dubai that was inspired to do a similar inter-disciplinary installation at the Safa British School of Dubai. 'SEA CHANGE' was then invited as part of a group exhibition, called The Land of Light, at the Santa Paula Art Museum.
